Love is in the air! It’s the month of February and, everywhere we go, we hear love songs being played. We see hearts hung in windows with displays of red and pink roses. People are shopping for the perfect Valentine cards and chocolate candy to say “I love you.” Our thoughts turn to love, to relationship, to family.
Actually, love has been in the air since the creation of mankind! God made Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, and placed them in the beautiful Garden of Eden to walk in relationship with Him as well as to oversee the Garden. Love begins with God. When He saw that man needed a helper, God made Eve to be in relationship with Adam, husband and wife. Genesis 2:24 explains God’s plan for marriage, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”
Though sin had entered the world, children were born to that first marriage. “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.” Psalm 127: 3-5.
Now, there’s family. “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’” Genesis 1:28. NKJ. Since sin had changed God’s first picture of family, God made a plan to redeem, to buy back His family who had chosen to rebel against Him.
God, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are ONE. But God so loved the world… so much…He gave His only Son Jesus to die, to be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind. John 3:16.
God gave all of mankind a choice; we can choose to love Him because He first loved us, or we can rebel and walk away from Him. All relationships begin with a choice.
God is love. His unconditional love, His choosing us, is the foundation of relationship.
“They will know we are Christians by our love.” John 13:34
“Love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
“Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:31
God tells us how to love. Strong relationships are based on God’s Word. There is a definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”
God is calling each of us to true relationship, to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. He is asking us to live in unity in the Body of Christ, and He has commissioned us to reach out to those who are lost in sin.
I hear a love song in the Spirit. “Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so.”
Will you sing back with me? “Yes, I love you, Jesus. Yes, I love You Jesus. Yes, I love You Jesus… because You first loved me.” Walk in God’s love.
